THE PARISH COUNCIL
What does the Parish Council do?
Preston Parish Council was established in in December 1894 and its role is to represent and act in the interests of all sections of the community.
A Parish Council is the lowest level of local government and consists of Councillors who are elected for a term of four years. All are volunteers. The Parish Councillors determine and set policy, and employ a part-time clerk to implement policy decisions. The Council works with the District and County Councils and other Authorities in matters affecting the Community such as highway maintenance, traffic, street lighting, education, planning, community safety and youth issues.
The Council meets on the first Wednesday of each month, in Preston Village Hall, with the exception of August when there is no meeting. Residents have the right to attend any of the Parish Council meetings, but may not participate in the proceedings. However, a period of time is allocated for public participation prior to the start of each meeting. Agendas for Parish Council meetings and Minutes of the meetings are posted on the web site and also on the notice boards in the village.
Acting on behalf of the Community
The Parish Council responds to and comments on planning applications for developments within the parish and also on developments in neighbouring parishes if they affect the PrestonCommunity. The Council responds to consultation documents issued by the Government, the County Council and the District Council and also to consultations from other authorities and organisations. This ensures that the views, concerns and needs of the community are taken into consideration when decisions are made by the various authorities and agencies.
Helping the Community
The Council supports and gives grants to the Village Hall, the Recreation Ground, the Village Newsletter and other village organisations It also provides and/or maintains allotments, the recreation areas and Village Green (Robinson’s Meadow) , bus shelters, litter bins and public seats.
